In 2013 the Long ESA, a modified version of the Rutan Long-EZ, broke the world speed record for manned electric planes at 326 km/h. The aircraft even beat conventional gasoline-powered Cessnas. At high altitudes an electric propulsion even has advantages over gasoline propulsion, as no combustion takes place.
